ShereDesign: Etsy shop of the week

I just must tell you about ShereDesign and the lovely jewellery that Helen makes. I discovered her beautiful work on a local Etsy search, and I really took a liking to her designs and style. I have been to meet Helen twice now to pick up purchases, a lovely pendant for my sis and these earrings below, just given to a good friend for her birthday. I was a little tempted to keep both items but I was pleased that I passed them on to their intended owners as they were both delighted with them. Please check her out here and have a browse through the shop x

time passing too fast

Thank goodness it's the weekend!! Working lots of hours at the moment and not getting much time to play in the studio.... boo! Hope to post some new items in the shop this weekend, if i ever finish all the jobs we have to do, garden weeding, washing clothes, and loads of other things we didn't get around to doing in the week. We just seem to have a lack of time at the moment and are constantly playing catch up!

I feel like this year has gone far too fast, please can someone get it to slow down! I had planned to do loads of things this 'summer', like going to see an old friend in Oxford, taking my nieces out for the day, having people over, going camping, etc etc. Before you know it the nights are drawing in, the kids are all getting ready to go back to, or start, school and its getting closer to autumn and summer is gone! Thats not a bad thing though, i do love autumn, it's just come round a bit too quickly. Is this a sign I'm getting old??

post 193, 7 posts til the giveaway

Not that I'm trying to whip you up into an excited frenzy or anything, but I think to celebrate 200 posts on this blog (joint celebration of me thinking of enough stuff to write about and you readers having enough will power to keep reading!!) I should do something a little special. So in seven posts time i will post a little draw on here for you to enter if you want to try to win some sooziebee goodies, pictures of the prize (!) coming soon.....

Above some garden sketches i did at the weekend. The garden isn't at its best now, lot of the summer colour has gone but we have some amazing poppy heads and seed pods etc, so still good for inspiration and sitting out enjoying the last of the summer sun (ha!)

Blog awards

Jesse from Jezzeblog has kindly awarded me two blog awards and has also tagged me, she has bestowed the 'Brillante Weblog' award, and the 'I Love Your Blog' award on my humble little sooziebee blog! I must say a BIG Thank you Jesse and thanks for your amazing blog too and the insight into what you get up to designing and printing your lovely fabrics and prints! In fact, it was Jesse who inspired me to start lino-printing.

Ok, so now I need to pass them on... whilst trying to think of 6 unspectacular quirks of mine. Here are the rules:

1. Link back to the person who tagged you
2. Mention the rules on your blog
3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours
4. Tag 6 following bloggers by linking to them
5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged bloggers blogs letting them know they've been tagged

And here are my unspectacular quirks::

1. I try to gauge how good my day at work is going to be by how many times I have to change my ipod shuffle on my journey to work. If the perfect play list comes on with no changes needed I know it's gonna be a good day!

2. I HATE supemarkets, can't think of anything i would rather not do than go trolling round the supermarket, internet ordering rocks, Sainsburys!

3. I like ironing, (surprising but true, especially when you consider my aversion to all other kinds of household chores!)

4. I always have to take a glass of water to bed with me, don't know why, I hate waking up thirsty!

5. I love maps, and always have to have one if I'm going anywhere, I like to know where i actually 'am' in the world (yes, my friends have nick-named me 'map girl')

6. the bed HAS to be made before i get in it

There you go, it wasn't that difficult.

Now the six people people to tag and pass on these lovely awards to i just love all of the following blogs, take a look...

Phew, done, looking forward to hearing about your quirks girls!!

all sketchbooks great and small

ideas for some new work.

I'm trying to sketch a little most days and am filling up my lovely square sketch book with doodles and sketches. I think i have found the perfect size of sketchbook, a hardback chunky 190 page book 0f 140gsm sized paper about 7 inch square, which is great to carry around and whip out whenever you see something that takes your fancy!

I think over the past three years I have tried almost every kind of size and shape in my quest for the perfect 'one', i suppose i have grown to love each one in their own special way, depending on what i used them for and fill them with but this little one purchased from a gorgeous little art shop/gallery in Grasmere just fits with what i'm doing at the mo.

Anyway, ramble over.... things are good here. We have just had a bank holiday weekend so one less day to work this week (yey!) but I'm at work every day so not much time for studio work. I'll post if anything interesting happens....

Well thank you kind readers for your comments on the cards and new look blog, i'm glad you like them. I'm going to pack some cards up and post in the shop this weekend and maybe (you just never know) i may get another sale sometime this side of the next Olympics! (um, note of sarcasm, methinks, but it's my own fault for not posting goods on there on a more regular basis).

No, really, from now on, no more negative thoughts about either of my jobs, I'm rethinking a few things with sooziebee, primarily the need to be more focussed, and have decided that my day job, which has been a major source of stress over the past few weeks, is not going to beat me. I have an amazing team so we are gonna show those suits what we can really do. Yeah.... !

It's amazing what a 7.30am swim does for you! Bring it on!

Thursday, 21 August 2008

These are the new cards i printed today. Had a really early start with a 7.30am (i know, i am shocked i managed to get out of bed on my day off) swim which got the circulation going and was underway in the studio by 9.30am. I have been using my new printer to print off the layered backgrounds and have lino printed my garden designs on top using block printing ink. I think i will be posting packs in the etsy shop soon....

Loving swaps

Here is the contents of the package i received the other day in the swap (see details here) from Vicky from Plush Patterns She is a a designer and printer of patterns and wallpapers and her package she sent was a delight. Check out here work and lovely blog.

AS for me, I'm in the studio today (STILL with a runny nose!!) but making some cards which I will post later.... must dash for a tissue bfn x

Blog of the Week

Welcome to the new look blog, a bit more colour co-ordinated, to match my logo, pink and brown, it is better than the old fashioned brown one??? Comments please dear reader....

more doodles. I'm enjoying using my black pen and just doodling away to my hearts content.

On an different note i did a little swap with Vicky from PlushPatterns and I will post you some pics of my little package that arrived in the post tomorrow. For tonight I have the house to myself and I'm going to make the most of it by having a bubble bath, getting into my pjs, and doing a bit more doodling.

One more thing before I go, I have discovered a new lovely blog via PrintPattern. So I think I may have to be re-introducing my Blog of the Week spot. The blog in question is Lizzyhouse
and it is the creation of one design student, Elizabeth House, who graduates soon. It's a really interesting and inspiring read (usually I don't go for real wordy blogs, as I just havent the time to plough thru them sometimes) but this one is a great read, if it was a book you wouldn't be able to put it down. Check it out..............

And, ta-dah, here is a piece of her lovely work.......

Playing with patterns

Finally got round to doing some patterns with my lino designs, i like them, i just don't know what they want to be when they grow up???

sometimes do you find yourself doodling without even realising and then you look at it and wonder what it all means? Any doodle-translators out there?

Head full

of thoughts.....
Cut backs on my staff at work for a start, we have redundancies in the pipeline which is terrible news for all concerned. Big business at its best, buy a small firm with a fantastic team and good morale, squeeze them dry, make them work their socks off, make a few redundant, destroy said morale, and tell the rest that if business doesn't improve (ie we don't start making a bigger profit) we may face closure! Morale now non-existent. I have to get out!!! This is the way things are and there is nothing I can do about it.
I wish i could take the leap and do 'sooziebee' full-time but there is just no way I would be able to pay the bills. I really admire these people who do take the plunge, a very courageous and brave thing to do, but not practical for me at the moment. I still feel like I am finding my style, my thing, if you know what I mean, I feel like I'm jumping from one thing to another with no real focus, apart from wanting to make and design something I can either license or sell.
I started this sketch when I was taking 'the phone call' about the job situation, and I think it reflects all the things crammed into my grey matter at the moment, too many thoughts and not enough space!

New cards

I have been off work this week, not feeling too good with upper respiratory bunged-up-ness and generally feeling like all i wanna do is sleep. I did go back to bed today after watching a bit of the Olympics on BBC. Sleep evaded me though and I ended up back downstairs in front of the TV watching Trishia. Give me strength, day time TV sucks!!
Here are some cards i did a few days ago, working on my backgrounds i developed a few weeks ago with lino printing on top. I am hoping to take these a step further when I am feeling a bit more up for it, so i will have more to post later in the week, i hope. I still have to unwrap my new printer and try it out so soon I plan to be doing a bit of a print run so i actually feel like i am creating something to take to market.

Pink Shoe combo

Have been trying out some ideas for my cards (apart from I don't know very much about the Photoshop program I am using so have been kind of in the dark and muddling around) but here is a composition i did yesterday (i know, no great shakes design wise but I am just getting the hang of it very slowly) As I'm off work poorly I haven't got anything else to post work-wise, am fed-up with this grotty cold and want to be better now so i can start my running again and get fit.

Does this ring any bells and bring back any fond 'Saturday-mornings-in-your-pyjamas' memories for anyone?

I have been thinking about suggesting a 'swap-shop' kind of thing on my blog for a while and I saw this on a blog I have just discovered today Plush Patterns from London UK, who says

"basically what happens is you make a package of beautiful crafty bits spending max £10, some of your own work and swap them with another blogger that you like. It's so exciting to recieve a package in the post with and I actually really enjoyed getting together the package".

If anyone is interested please leave a comment and lets get swapping .....
Sniff sniff, still full of cold, have had a very lazy weekend and not feling any better for all the rest, boo!

Photoshop for beginners

Finally dragged myself out of my bad mood, and got off my arse and moved my printer and scanner up to the studio and finally got it to speak to the new lap top. PIcture the scene, i put the disk in thinking it would work staright away, but no, a message flashes up. Huston we have a problem.... compatability issues... What the .... What do I do? oh yes ring the helpline number which i have been paying for for the last nine months and have never used.... note to self cancel direct debit..). So I have done some playing around with scanning and cutting and pasting (am a complete novice so I am pleased I managed to do something that looks like a picture!!) Ha, there is hope for me yet. Ok, I'm knocking off for the day, have a good weekend x

Thats what time the workmen next door started banging and hammering and drilling this morning! Can't you get a decent lie-in around here... er... hello... tired girl with a cold, needs her beauty sleep!

Well the day started off a bit noisily to say the least. I still have my cold and my nose has gone all sore and dry and peeling (umm, very attractive!), and the weather forecast is pants so we can't go camping this weekend! But hey, you know things could be worse. It has taken me ages to get going today, I'm not feeling the studio love, I think I just want to sleep. But yes, the workmen are still making a noise. Even with my earplugs in I can hear them!

Oh dear, well I did get something done, even if it was only a 'wee' thing, and that was to print up more gift tags for the Etsy shop, see below. I really am trying to keep posting things in there but they just seem to get buried as soon as they are posted. I'm not having much luck. Any tips anyone....

Oh bugger it, I'm giving up for the day, am just full of negative vibes so I do apologise for my whining post. Will be happier tomorrow, promise!

Thursday, 7 August 2008

I thought I would share my latest commission with you, it's for a good friend of mine and she has been waiting for this since November last year. I hope she is pleased with it and hope it was worth the wait.

I'm not feeling much better today, still snotty and bunged up. Colds should be banned until winter time, then I may be more tempted to just snuggle up in bed with a good book and cup of cocoa and give in to it. Instead the sun is shining on this part of the UK today and it is far too nice to be couped up in the house. So I have had some productive studio time to do some catching up. I have already got ideas for my next project but I am making myself finish off other things before I commence. It's all about a range of birthday cards for boys, it seems that there is a bit of a gap in the market for blokey cards.

I also want to take my garden project a bit further as well by developing some more product ideas so watch this space....

Yup, it just goes to show that burning the candle at both ends isn't good for you! I'm armed with a king size supply of tissues, feeling a bit sorry for myself, nose dripping like a tap, sore throat etc etc, won't bore you with the details. Anyone cracked the cure for 'the common cold' yet?

Hangover recovery complete!

And so I got around to starting to fill up my Etsy shop again to see whether a bit more effort will translate into more sales. I applied for a place in a Christmas market this year but didn't get in (boo!) so I am going to bin the idea of doing another fair (I think!) and make more of my Etsy shop for now. I enjoyed the one I did last year but it was bloody hard work and I don't really know if I want to do another yet? Hopefully a few commissions will come my way, or I may try the UK version of Etsy, Folksy.

Party pics and pouts

What a fab weekend and what a great party. We had a bit of a new studio party on Sat night and my sister came down to stay for the weekend. I have had such a lovely time, I don't want to go to work tomorrow! Here are a few snaps from the night.... Mucho vino was consumed and I paid for it this morning, with a 'wee' hangover!

Me and Paul (the man who made the studio 'happen', he has put in so much time and has done a fantastic job

The Girls: pouting like there's no tomorrow

And last but not least me and my lovely sister little-hb, missing you babe! Wish you could have stayed for longer!
