Picking up

Which could mean quite a few things... I'm picking myself up after a traumatic week of losing my dog, Jack. I'll not go on about it too much, but we miss him. He was such a massive part of our lives and the house is so quiet without that crazy boy running about and just being a sweetheart.
I also picked up my sketchbook and pens today, which shows how much better I am feeling. Earlier in the week I couldn't face the thought of even doodling so it's good to put pen to paper again. I'm working on my bird theme still, which has had quite a good shelf life so far, but I'm working on variations... see above... this one is a bit different to my others in the series, and reminds me of thought bubbles, maybe reflecting how many different things have been going on in my head this week.
On an even more positive note, my sales on Folksy are also picking up. I have now sold three originals and a set of 'moving house' cards. BUT I have been having a major dilemma about my pricing structure. I think I have always underpriced myself, party because I always felt like I wasn't a real 'artist' (i do seem to have a problem labelling myself!!), I didn't think anyone would want to buy my work, regardless of what my nearest and dearest repeatedly told me, and I felt like I was just playing about and I didn't really take myself seriously (but then its bad to take yourself tooo seriously!). But as time has moved on, I'm feeling more confident in myself and my work and maybe it's time to rethink my prices. I don't want to undervalue my work but also don't want to price myself out of the market either (in the current economic climate and all). Is this a problem everyone wrestles with?

Debbie Bryan's Shop

I just wanted to share with you some photos I took today of Debbie Bryan's exciting new shop space in the Lace Market in Nottingham. I mentioned meeting Debbie a few weeks ago, when my sister and I called in to her gorgeous shop to have a peek, and today I had the pleasure of a second meeting to discuss some collaborative work in the very near future. It's all very exciting indeedy but I won't say too much just yet as I don't want to jinx it.
Here are some of the beautiful items Debbie has for sale, all sourced from local artists and designers and handpicked by Debbie herself. As well as being a shop, there is also an extensive range of events being held here, from taster workshop evenings and day workshops with the talented artists Debbie works with, to Button Nights, where you are invited to bring along an item of clothing you want to jazz up and accessorize with the one-off original resin buttons that Debbie makes herself. There is also a book launch coming soon for Lucy Renshaw all about 'Mixed Media and Found Materials'. I'm looking forward very much to seeing how this develops and grows. It's all great for the independent craft scene in Nottingham.

You can find out more about Debbie and the other artists she works with by checking out her website here

follow this tissue trail

and there you will find me!

But this time, it is because of a non-dog-related problem, its a cold..... I'm all full of snot, sneezes and a sore throat! I'm still quite tearful from time to time and I miss Jack like crazy, but it is getting a little easier to remember all the lovely things we did with him, instead of feeling so sad. Its a funny old thing, this loss/grief business, I don't think I'm very good at it, but I'm really trying to be!!

Anyhoo, I'm off for an early night, tomorrow is another day.... but I don't think I'll be able to stray too far from the box of tissues!! My nose is dripping again!! Boo!!

gone to doggy heaven

Today we had to make the awful and heart-wrenching decision to have our dog, jack, put to sleep. He had been off-colour for a couple of weeks, but always seemed to perk up, but he took a turn for the worse yesterday. Today the vet operated and found a large abdominal tumour which had perforated his gut, and which, sadly was inoperable. It was the kindest thing to do, but we both feel devastated. He was a huge part of our lives for the past 7 years, full of character and energy. He was 10 going on 2, and was always a puppy at heart. He had a great life with us, and will be missed VERY VERY much.

new cards

not a lot to post today as my dog is at the vets and I'm waiting for a phonecall to find out what's up with the poor boy......
well, we have been to pick him up, and the vet is concerned and thinks he might have pancreatitis, he has had some iv fluids, antibiotics and some pain killers and is looking well and truly sorry for himself. Poor old Jack, i hope he is wagging his tail as usual tomorrow, fingers crossed x

calling all readers...

I just need your help with some ideas for my Nottingham Craft Mafia Team 'Propaganda' meeting tomorrow night. A bit late I know, but organisation at the moment is a bit thin on the ground. Okay, I will share with you a little of what our team is and what we are trying to do. The Craft Mafia in Nottingham has been on the go for nearly a year and we have been working lots on getting involved with events and organising our lovely shop etc. We decided to split into teams, shop team, events team and a kind of promotional/online/marketing/PR kind of team (all the above words we didn't like so decided on 'Propaganda, which we all kind of like.
So our aims are to raise the profile on NCM on land and online by spreading the word and getting recognised as a quality organisation for art/craft/design in the Midlands. Our team had an impromptu meeting a few weeks ago, came up with lots of great ideas, such as press packs, ideas for our blog and how to raise our profile in the area and with other UK Craft Mafias.
What I would like you to do, dear readers, is just help me out with any business links, marketing tips, blog posts, ideas, how-to's etc, that you can, which I can incorporate into my little pack. One example, we may have the opportunity to exhibit at a local outlet, but I haven't a clue on how to go about getting an exhibition together, not a clue where to start, although the prospect of getting involved with something like this is VERY exciting. So if anyone has any tips they can share I would be soooo pleased to hear from you.
watch this space, for how we get on....
By the way, as you can see from my picture for this post, I haven't been spending any time in the studio lately. hopefully I will have some new work and maybe some news to share in a week or so, I don't want to spill the beans in case I jinx things..... ooh, the suspense!!

Hey... see this.... I just sold it on Folksy and I'm really rather chuffed!! I'm also getting a new website soon, which I'm also rather chuffed about. I'm at work tomorrow though, and that I am NOT chuffed about.

I've added some cool new discoveries to my blog roll, check em out if you have a spare five mins.

And where did that week go?

I know, I can't believe it either, it's been nearly a week since my last post, and I don't know where the time has gone. It's been really hot too, so it has been warm enough to sit out and eat on an evening, and it seems I have had something to occupy me most nights this week, so it just seems that it has flown.
I was going to do a massive blurb about feeling too busy, over stretching yourself and making too many commitments, but I have just deleted it. Its too annoying to even write, never mind read, so I won't subject you to that today! I think I have just had too much going on in my head this week and feel like I need to get it out!! (Sue, shut up, you are doing it again!!) (that was the voice in my head in case you were wondering!!!)
Instead I will show you my new picture (as yet nameless, I'm thinking of calling it either 'Identity' or 'I am where I'm from' (deep or what??). Its on a bigger format than I usually do (A3) as I had a chat with someone last week who suggested working bigger.... so here you go, i've gone bigger!! Something I wouldn't have thought about, but maybe in this case bigger might be better!! Who knows? I'll tell you what though, bigger takes a lot longer, my right hand is aching now. (ooh, does that sound rude, it wasn't meant to!)
